How much does it cost to live in Bali for digital nomads?

Bali is the destination for digital nomads who are seeking a high quality of life at a low cost of living. Here are some tips for managing the cost of living as a digital nomad in Bali.

  • How much does it cost to stay in Bali?

As a digital nomad, making smart choices can significantly impact your daily budget. To save on accommodation costs, consider staying in hostels instead of luxury resorts or hotels. We decided to stay in hostels instead of fancy resorts and hotels because it will save your budget as much as possible for your entire trip. You can find accommodation for 100K Rupiah(7 USD) or even cheaper per night.

If the hostel is run by a local owner, You can enjoy a nice breakfast at no extra cost. Instead of going to fancy restaurants, we went to local Warungs for lunch and dinner. The food is delicious and super cheap; you may pay as little as 10K Rupiah per day! (less than 1 USD)

  • How do I find the best accommodation in Bali on a budget?

Discover the secrets of finding the perfect budget-friendly accommodation with insights from NomadHer member, Ana, who spent two months traveling within Bali. For short-term stays, Ana recommends using platforms like Booking and Hostelworld to search for hostels. These spaces not only provide affordable lodging but also offer opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.

However, for longer-term accommodation, Ana suggests tapping into the local network. Don't hesitate to ask the locals for recommendations. Whether you're in hostels, restaurants, or diving shops, the friendly locals are always eager to share valuable tips, leading you to find the best and most budget-friendly places to stay. Embrace these tips to make the most of your journey without compromising on the quality of your accommodation.

  • How much does the food cost in Bali?

For those seeking the comforts of fancy Western-style restaurants and dining bars, you can expect to budget similarly to living in a metropolitan city. On the other hand, if you opt for local Indonesian food and frequent the traditional "warungs" (local restaurants), you could spend as little as 100k Rupiah per day(= 7 USD).

For a more diverse food experience and to try various activities, you might want to allocate around 300k Rupiah per day(=20 USD). However, it's important to note that your budget is entirely in your hands. Depending on the choices you make, you can adjust your daily expenses to suit your lifestyle.

A Unique Coworking Space for Creative Female Digital Nomads in Ubud, Bali

During our stay in Ubud, we had the pleasure of visiting the captivating coworking space, "Beluna - House of Creatives," nestled amidst the serene rice fields. The eco-friendly bamboo house immediately piqued our interest, and we were fortunate to have the chance to speak with the founder, Lauren.

Originally from the U.K., Lauren has been in Bali for four years, curating a community for digital nomads in the creative field. Her journey began with a holiday trip to Bali, where she fell in love with the rich culture and mesmerizing nature. Inspired by her love for nature, Lauren decided to create something unique that combined work and nature, and thus, Beluna was born.

Top 3 Activities for Digital Nomads in Bali

While digital nomading in Bali, immerse yourself in an array of nature-related activities that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and energized!

  1. Sunrise Hiking and Water Adventures: Bali offers incredible hiking trails that lead to breathtaking sunrise views. Rafting and surfing opportunities are abundant, allowing you to experience the thrill of riding the waves and exploring Bali's pristine waters. For a truly enchanting experience, head to Nusa Penida, just an hour's ferry ride from the mainland. Here, you can indulge in snorkeling amidst awe-inspiring coral reefs, free diving, or scuba diving to encounter the majestic manta rays.
  2. Connect with Nature and Inner Self: Bali's serene landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for connecting with nature and engaging in spiritual practices. Ride a bike through endless rice paddies, witnessing the scenic beauty of rural Bali. In Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, find peace through meditation and yoga amidst tranquil surroundings. Allow yourself to embrace the special energy that nature and inner reflection bring. We found ourselves connected with nature, and our inner souls felt special energy.
  3. Explore Bali's Spiritual Side: Bali's spiritual essence is woven into every corner of the island. Visit ancient temples, partake in traditional ceremonies, and delve into the Balinese culture. Witnessing deep-rooted spirituality will offer a profound and enlightening experience during your nomadic journey.

What to Pack for Bali?

If you are going to travel on a low budget, be careful with the weight of your backpack! You may be moving from hostel to hostel, and the lighter the weight, the better. Besides, there are laundry places all over the place, so you don't need to worry about clean clothes.

Here is my "must-bring" list:

  1. External Battery: Carry an external battery to charge your phone, as some hostels may not have plugs conveniently located near your bed.
  2. Plug Adapter: Ensure you have a plug adapter compatible with Indonesian power outlets.
  3. Headbands: With Bali's hot and humid weather, headbands will keep your hair away from your face, providing comfort throughout the day.
  4. Snorkel/Freediving Mask: For water enthusiasts, bringing your own snorkel or freediving mask is a great idea. Bali offers picturesque spots accessible from the beach, allowing you to explore the underwater wonders without booking a snorkel trip.
  5. Lock: If you're working remotely and carrying your computer, having a lock for the lockers provided in hostels is beneficial. While Bali is generally safe, having a lock adds an extra layer of security for your belongings.

By packing these essential items, you'll be well-prepared for your Bali journey, making the most of your experience without unnecessary worries or hassles. Happy travels!
