New York City is often associated with plenty of things: some good, some bad and some things that you don’t even know what to make of. However, I must assure you that despite the warnings and the risky adrenaline filled movies about the city, it is indeed possible to have both a safe and enjoyable experience in the heart of Manhattan. New York is a city with a wide range of boroughs and neighborhoods that are home to the most diverse group of people, cultures and cuisines. It is possibly the most metropolitan city that you will ever encounter and has a heartbeat to it that is impossible to replicate. The city that never sleeps is indeed the best way to describe it as the city often feels alive in itself. When you visit Manhattan, you will meet the most interesting people and hear the most extraordinary stories and if you’re lucky enough, you will have some unforgettable adventures. I know that embarking on a journey to New York is definitely a nerve racking experience and I’m sure that everyone around you will have some sort of advice or opinion to give you. I acknowledge that most of these things are well-intentioned but just remember to be aware that not all these sources come from facts and are sometimes based on rumors and old wives’ tales. However, that being said, New York definitely has some shady areas and you just need to be able to take care of yourself  in order to remain safe.

Here are my New York solo female travel tips:

1. Do not take the subway alone after 11pm
The subway is the most commonly used mode of transportation in New York and is extremely efficient and cost friendly. It may be daunting at first, but make sure to familiarize yourself with the system and you should be fine. Ensure that if you are ever in a subway car alone that you switch cars. Conductors are often found in middle cars and it is usually recommended to travel in their car. Mind your own business whilst traveling and make sure to be aware of your belongings.

2. Do not venture into boroughs that you are not advised to be in
Familiarize yourself with the safe neighborhoods and the not so safe areas some of which include East Harlem and the Bronx. These neighborhoods often have sights to visit too and you may do so in groups of 3 or more; there are often tour groups arranged.

3. Do not leave personal belongings unattended in public areas

New York is full of many types of people including thiefs. Do not tempt them by leaving your belongings out in the open. Make sure to always keep a close eye on your personal items in order to ensure their safety.

4. Make sure to know your way around/route
One way of ensuring additional safety is by being aware of where you are going. It will help you remain efficient and not accidentally venture into areas where you do not want to be. It will also help you refrain from viewing your map or directions on your phone which will immediately signal your status as a tourist and might warrant you unwanted attention.

5. Keep your belongings close to your body

New York has a lot of pickpockets and the only way to avoid it is by being constantly aware of your belongings and holding onto your valuables tight. In the worst case that you do get stolen from, I’d recommend to not get too affected as it happens often in the city. In order to minimize your misfortune, make sure to not carry too much money or valuables on your body and to instead keep them in the safe.

6. Maintain a brisk pace of walk

By maintaining a quick speed, you will be able to get to places fast without attracting unwanted attention and you will blend in with the local New Yorkers.

7. Do not be scared or fear walking alone - remain confident

Stay confident. You are a strong, independent woman and you have all the resources to take care of yourself. To invest in this confidence, make sure to download all the apps that you need to assist you on this journey and educate yourself on your environment and surroundings.

8. Don’t stop and take selfies/photos in the middle of the road

By doing this you are not only clearly labelling yourself as a tourist but you are also annoying a lot of the locals. This will probably earn you a few brisk looks or even huffs while people walk past you. If you wish to take pictures, make sure to stop in a way that you are not blocking other people’s paths.

Last but not least, enjoy your time in the greatest city in the world! It is absolutely magical and has something for every single type of person.
