🔹 Who are the Haenyeo Divers?
Known as “sea women,” the Haenyeo have been free-diving off Jeju’s coast for centuries. Dressed in black wetsuits and conical hats, these incredible women collect seafood from the bottom of the ocean - WITHOUT diving gear, holding their breath for minutes!
🔹 What is the Haenyeo’s Job?
Armed with traditional tools, Haenyeo rely on their skills and a buoyant device called a Tewak to gather seafood like abalone, sea urchins, octopus, and edible seaweed. Their sustainable methods and deep connection to the ocean make their profession truly special.
🔹 When and why did they start?
Dating back to the 17th century, Haenyeo emerged from Jeju’s matriarchal society, where men had to leave the island for long periods due to fishing jobs or work on the Korean mainland. So women became the primary providers by training their diving skills!
🔹 Why do they matter today?
Today, the Haenyeo culture symbolizes women’s resilience and empowerment. But they are not only cultural icons but also environmental heroes. Their eco-friendly practices highlight sustainable fishing. They inspire future generations to honor and continue their traditions.
Haenyeos refer to local female divers 🤿 in Jeju Island who dive into the sea, collecting various marine species for harvest, such as seaweed, abalone, sea urchins, and other seafood. We will meet a real Haenyeo Eunjoo who settled down her new life as a Haenyeo 10 years ago. 🧜♀️ She learned the ways of the Haenyeo to become a professional and settled down in Jeju Seogwipo with her family. To conserve and spread the culture of Haenyeo locally and globally, she teams up with her husband and young Haenyeos who start Haenyo diving as a job in Jeju Island. The Haenyeo team organizes a cultural workshop for tourists to empower the local Haenyeo community. During this Jeju Haeneyo Camp, you will have the opportunity to experience a centuries-old tradition among local female divers while enjoying breathtaking ocean nature along the way.
