Is there a solo trip that has inspired you?

One of the solo trips that deeply inspired me was my summer journey to Portugal in 2022, which I embarked on after a challenging period. During this time, I came to the realization that I needed to break free from waiting for others and overcome any fear of venturing out on my own. I devoted time to myself and pursued activities that had long been aspirations.

My solo adventure in Portugal served as a powerful reminder of my ability to navigate unfamiliar territory, communicate in a foreign city, and connect with new people, all on my own. Exploring a country that had been on my bucket list for ages brought immense joy and fulfillment. It was during this transformative journey that I discovered my passion for encouraging women to embrace solo travel, a revelation that has since shaped my mission to inspire others.

Which country would you recommend for female travelers going solo?

I have a few destinations in mind. In Europe, I suggest Lisbon and Budapest. These are two budget-friendly cities that provide a secure setting and various activities, no matter your travel style. In Asia, I'd recommend Malaysia or Thailand. They are fantastic choices for beginning a solo journey in Southeast Asia. The locals are friendly and ever-willing to assist. Moreover, you'll encounter a wonderful community of fellow solo travelers, making it difficult to feel alone!

Do you have any tips for women who are going on their first solo trip?

My top tips for a first solo trip are:

• Always tell a family member and/or friend about your itinerary.
• Never tell people you don't know that you're traveling solo.
• Research the country you're visiting to learn about the culture before you travel.
• Plan your trip, but don't over-plan to leave room for adventure, as you may meet new people and your itinerary will change.
• Don't arrive late at night at a new destination.
• Buy a SIM card to avoid phone charges
• There will be times when you may be on your own, so don't be afraid and take this opportunity to spend some time with yourself.

What was the most exciting aspect of being part of this program?

The most exciting thing about this program was being able to share my passion for traveling to a bigger community and also challenge myself to do something different. I love the fact that NomadHer is a platform that lets you express yourself freely! I also got to meet other female travelers who are part of the NomadHer community.

What message do you have for upcoming article contributors?

I believe that every solo trip has left me with a sense of inspiration in its own unique way. Each city and country I explore offers a fresh perspective on life and the global landscape. These experiences fuel my imagination and keep me excited about my future journeys.

While I've been fortunate to visit numerous breathtaking destinations, my solo trip to Portugal holds a special place in my heart. Portugal exudes an irresistible charm, blending vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes within its compact borders. Strolling through the historic streets of its cities, inhaling the ocean breeze on its sandy shores, and delving into undiscovered facets of the country opened my eyes to the profound beauty that exists in our world. This journey not only deepened my understanding of Portugal but also reminded me of the privilege it is to explore and embrace the diverse wonders our planet has to offer.

Which country would you recommend for female travelers?

As someone who has exclusively embarked on solo trips within Europe, my recommendations are centered around European countries. In this context, I would highly suggest considering The Netherlands, Portugal, or Belgium for those venturing into solo travel for the first time.

Foremost, these nations prioritize safety, providing a reassuring environment for solo explorers. Additionally, their efficient and affordable public transportation systems facilitate seamless city-to-city and intra-country travel. The prevalence of English as a well-spoken language in these destinations simplifies communication for international visitors.

Lastly, these countries boast a plethora of captivating cities to discover, all conveniently located due to their relatively compact size. So, for a memorable and accessible introduction to solo travel, these European gems present fantastic options.

Could you give some advice for female travelers starting their first solo trip?

If you have never gone on a solo trip before, it’s okay to start small. If you want to plan a trip to another country or continent, go for it! But you can also plan a day trip somewhere close to home to help you get out of your comfort zone and get the feel for traveling alone before diving into solo travel on a greater scale.

My best friend and I traveled a lot in the past, and whenever we encountered the good, the bad, the wild, or the unexpected, we always said “It’s all part of the experience!” No matter how ironic it might have been in the moment, the saying is something I remind myself of when I travel. Traveling is full of beautiful, joyous moments and incredible experiences, but mishaps are unavoidable along the way. Instead of feeling down about it, just remember it’s all part of the experience and it doesn’t have to define you or your trip!

What aspect of being a part of this program excites you the most?

The most exciting thing about joining this program, for me, has been getting to explore a new creative medium with a team of wonderful ladies offering so much guidance and support!

The NomadHer community is full of so many wonderful women, and it’s incredible getting to uplift and be uplifted by other women as we all share our experiences and love of traveling. What Solo Journey Ignited Your Inspiration?

The first trip that comes to mind is my solo travel to Norway, around this time last year. I had just faced some new challenges in my life, which made me feel stuck in the place where I lived. For this reason, I couldn't wait to trade my usual environment for a new one, which turned out to be in the middle of the Norwegian forests. It was the first trip I embarked on without other people, and doing so made me realize that I am capable of so much more than I used to think. Now, every time I doubt myself, I think back to this adventure to remind myself of my potential.

What Destination Would You Suggest for a First Solo Adventure?

For many people, embarking on their first solo trip feels like a huge step. And in a lot of ways it is because you can no longer rely on someone else to map out your route, ask strangers for the best way to get to your hostel, or bring your tickets along. It is because of this that I would advise you to travel to a country where most people speak English so you are able to communicate with locals and other travelers in case of an emergency. A great option would be northern European countries such as Norway, Sweden, or Copenhagen. Most people, at least in the cities, are able to speak English there; their crime rates are fairly low, and in my opinion, these countries are very safe.

What Tips Can You Share for Those Beginning Their First Solo Journey?

1. Make and bring a copy of all your important paperwork, such as your passport or driver's license. That way, in case you lose any of these items, at least you'll have a copy of them which might speed up procedures to get a new one.
2. Send a live location to a family member or friend and ask them to check on you whenever you're feeling a little nervous. If something were to happen, they are able to track your location and inform the police.
3. Buy a local SIM or e-SIM because it will save you a lot of money, and you will still be able to use your mobile data when there's no WiFi. I have traveled to countries where I didn't have this option and relied on WiFi solely, which I didn't really feel safe with.
4. Leave enough room for spontaneity! You will meet people on your trip with whom you'd like to spend a few more days, and there will be destinations that you like better than others, so leave some room in your itinerary to change plans last minute.

What Excites You the Most About Becoming a Part of This Program?

Writing articles for the NomadHer article contributor program has been my first time writing articles for a different website than my own, so it was a great opportunity to explore different writing styles and forms. Because of the program, I have continued writing for other travel websites and blogs. In addition to this, the article contributor program has been a means for me to meet new people from the NomadHer community, who I still speak to almost once every week.

What Do You Think of the NomadHer Community?

I can't stress enough how valuable this community has been for me, offering me great opportunities to meet new people from all over the world and develop myself in terms of my career. Everyone is super helpful and going through the same struggles that accompany solo travel, so NomadHer is a space where you can ask all your questions and share all your doubts without being judged. I hope to stay an active member over the coming months and am looking forward to seeing what else this community has to offer for me.
